Accounting Research Databases

Search Strategies

When searching accounting databases, using the right keywords and search strategies can significantly improve the relevance and accuracy of your results. Here are some key strategies to help you conduct efficient and effective searches in accounting databases:

accounting databases:

1. Use Specific Accounting Terms

Focus on the exact terminology used in accounting to narrow down your search. For example:

  • Financial Reporting: Use terms like financial statements, balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, comprehensive income.
  • Revenue Recognition: Use phrases like revenue recognition policies, ASC 606, revenue recognition criteria, or contract liabilities.
  • Auditing: Search for terms like audit risk, internal controls, external audit, audit procedures, and audit findings.
  • Taxation: Include terms like corporate tax, tax policy, income tax accounting, deferred taxes, tax planning.
  • Management Accounting: Use terms like cost accounting, budgeting, variance analysis, activity-based costing, and financial analysis.

2. Use Boolean Operators

Boolean operators help refine and combine your search terms:

  • AND: Use this to combine different concepts and ensure that all terms are included in the results. For example:
    • "Revenue recognition" AND "ASC 606" (only results containing both terms will be returned).
  • OR: Use this to include synonyms or related terms, broadening your search. For example:
    • "Audit risk" OR "audit procedures" (results containing either term).
  • NOT: Use this to exclude irrelevant terms. For example:
    • "Financial statement fraud" NOT "tax accounting" (will exclude tax accounting articles from financial fraud results).
